Everybody loves shopping during the holiday season, but have you shopped with a small business yet? Small Business Saturday is the perfect time to do so!

Small Business Saturday is an annual holiday that was started by American Express to encourage communities to shop at local small businesses. It takes place every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It started as a campaign that was launched on November 27, 2010 and became an official holiday in 2011 with the backing and support of President Obama and the Senate. In order to support small businesses as much as possible, American Express helps small business owners promote their businesses and offers free personalized web ads. With these efforts, in 2012, about $5.5 billion was spent at small businesses across the nation and in 2014 that number reached about $16.2 billion (Farm Bureau Financial Services). This year, it is estimated that about 59% of holiday shoppers plan to participate in Small Business Saturday this year, 3% more than holiday shoppers planning on participating in Black Friday shopping (Bankrate).

The holiday season is very important for small businesses. In the 2021 American Express survey, 78% of small business owners said that last year’s holiday sales were critical to their success in 2022. This is why it’s important we support our small businesses, and Apogee can help you protect them!
